How to validate a Colombian NIT
How the check digit works
A DIAN NIT carries a verification digit (DV) at the end. Send the NIT with its DV as the last digit.
- Take the number without the DV and walk it right to left multiplying by
3, 7, 13, 17, 19, 23, 29, 37, 41, 43, 47, 53, 59, 67, 71. - Add up and compute
r = sum mod 11. - If
ris 0 or 1 the DV isr; otherwise it is11 − r.
Validate with the API
Direct use is free: 50 requests per IP per day, no signup. Endpoints: POST /validate, POST /batch, GET /generate/{doc_type} (for testing only: synthetic data, not real identities).
curl
curl -X POST "https://validalatam.ia-latam.app/validate" -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{"type":"CO_NIT","value":"897.811.179-4"}'
# synthetic test data only / solo para pruebas
curl "https://validalatam.ia-latam.app/generate/CO_NIT"Python
import requests
BASE = "https://validalatam.ia-latam.app"
r = requests.post(f"{BASE}/validate", json={"type": "CO_NIT", "value": "897.811.179-4"})
print(r.json()["valid"], r.json()["formatted"])
